I have a new found obsession with all things "Whistler". I visited Washington DC during the holiday break (yes...I went from Miami, Florida to Washington D.C. in the dead of winter!) and took a stroll around the Freer/Sackler Smithsonian Museum of Art.

The museum is relatively small with a beautiful central courtyard. I was particularly interested in checking out "The Peacock Room", which has been restored to its appearance from 1908.

Charles Lang Freer used the room as a space to display his collection of more than 250 ceramics pieces from throughout Asia. Originally designed by the architect Thomas Jeckyll, the room was redecorated by James McNeill Whistler as a "harmony in blue and gold".

Charles Freer believed that "all works of art go together, whatever their period.", not only can this be seen in the Peacock Room and the diverse collection it holds, but also in the Freer Gallery as a whole.

The detail of the space is a fantastic feast for the eyes. The space becomes even more spectacular the third Thursday of every month when the shutters are opened and the sunlight washes over the brilliant blues, greens and golds within the room.

"LA Art Show"

Happy Friday! Rachel here, guest blogging about my weekend plans...and perhaps yours. I was invited to attend the opening party for the LA Art Show this past Wednesday. Here is an image of "the scene" at the convention center...

I spent most of my time on the "Contemporary" side...here are a few shots of some poppy pieces by artists Natalie Featherstone and Speedy Graphitto...

Bright and edgy, with a sense of humor. I also wandered over to the "Historic and Traditional" side where there were beautiful photographs, oil paintings, pieces by Toulouse Lautrec and vintage posters.

While in Miami, I took in as much Art Deco as possible. Personally, I love this period in architecture and design. At its best, art deco represents elegance, glamor, functionality and modernity.

During my visit, I ate at a fantastic restaurant off of Collins Ave.called Indomania. The food is traditional Indonesian cuisine reinterpreted by the friendly Dutch couple that owns the establishment.

I ordered the Rijsttafel Vegetarian, which consists of a smorgasbord of delectable dishes, they also serve a version with meat or fish. I highly recommend this restaurant if anyone out there finds themselves in Miami Beach!

Stone Crabs are another delicacy I like to eat whilst in Miami...preferably on a sail boat, with my favorite Captain...Uncle Pete, and his two co-pilots...Chewy and Giorgio.

Our Larchmont Village Studio is buzzing with excitement, we just completed our new Winter Window for the holiday season. If you have not seen it yet, take a small detour and check it out!

We reupholstered our classic wing back chair in bright red and a festive, yet modern print to by Romo. The drapery panel is made from a brilliant embroidered linen by Osbourne and Little and the wall covering with charcoal "sketched" trees is also by Osbourne and Little. And of course, the handmade paper panel is from the talented Lori Weitzner.

Our great friends at Bausman and Co. loaned us exquisite antique accessories including 3 wood finials and a gorgeous antique birdcage, which I blogged about here.

"At The LACMA: California Design"

I attended the opening gala for California Design 1930-1965: "Living in a Modern Way", this past Wednesday night. The exhibition is one of the first large scale showings of Mid Century Modern design from California.

Recently, I attended a fascinating conference in my favorite city, New York City. I flew in on the heels of Hurricane Irene, and felt the whirlwind that is New York, for the next six days.

Fourteen colleagues and I held intensive discussion ranging in topics from Leadership to Productivity, The Luxury Experience, transparency of The Process, and the Future. We discussed our roles as Guides, Curators, Advisers and Advocates for our clients, with the goal of Living Well, and Being More. Our great friend Steve Nobel of Nobelinks was our master facilitator.

We were based at the exquisite Peninsula Hotel on 55th and Fifth Avenue, where every detail is attended to, from the planters outside to beautiful and unusual floral arrangements in the lobby.

Taking a break from our discussions, we toured three apartments in the 1908 Renaissance Revival landmark Apthorp in the Upper West Side.

Built by the Astors, the building is so beautiful, just look at this gate and the stone detail of the large arched entry drive. We enjoyed a private tour of some "available" apartments, and one large space currently under total construction. The old world proportions, ornate ceilings, moldings and fireplaces speak to "True Luxury".

Our dinnertime view from above Columbus Circle was taken while dining at the top floor restaurant in the Museum of Arts and Design. Delicious cuisine, delightful modern space and incredible view.

No trip to the city is complete until I can stretch my legs along Fifth and Madison Avenues. The Cartier Building is always elegant. Built in 1905 as a private neo-Italian Renaissance style palazzo, it was converted into Cartier in 1917.

I loved Juicy Couture's Fifth Avenue glass sheet facade placed over the building's original, beautiful architectural details, with mannequins in between.

Ralph Lauren, as always, is elegant in his creative displays of sunglasses in his new Madison Avenue eye wear boutique.

I always pause at Rockefeller Center to gaze up at the bronze, "Atlas", and down at the details of the sidewalk grilles, every detail a magnificent testament to the Art Deco period and the vision of John D. Rockefeller, Jr.

Built between 1933 and 1939 the Center today is an exciting and vibrant complex, looking to the future by installing solar panels and planning a "green" roof on top of Radio City Music Hall.

"Square Foot Garden"

My new "Square Foot Garden" was delivered and installed this week. I'm ready for fresh picked salad tonight-oh, perhaps not quite yet, but I'm anxious!

We collaborate with Jill Harris, of Canyon Design, on our Interior Design projects whenever possible. She's delightful and very talented. Jill has been devising flat "Square Foot Vegetable and Herb Gardens" this year. Because of the limited space in my rear and side gardens, I wanted to place this one on our front terrace.

I dressed up the "box" with fancy iron hinges and elevated it on turned legs, which are going to get a coat of dry brushed periwinkle blue paint this weekend. Instead of the traditional flat box planted in the ground, I decided to use an elevated "stack" to make mine unusual, and conserve space.

Here are the veggies I'm ready to plant! Jill selected various lettuces, brussel sprouts and two varieties of beets for my "Fall" harvest...

Jill can plant about twice as many plants using the "Square Foot" dimensions, as opposed to more traditional vegetable garden layouts. You can see that the top of each of the two levels is divided by 1'-0" dimensions, and the height and depth of the boxes all compute by "one square foot"...delicious!

"Studio Visit: Astek Inc."

Astek Inc. is a locally owned and operated company that creates specialty wallcoverings. CJ, Rachel and I recently went on an inspiring tour of their showroom and design studio, led by business owner, Aaron Kirsch.

In addition to the extensive library of designer wallcoverings they carry, Astek offers their own line of original and fantastically whimsical, bold patterns. Here is a "sampling" of what was on display in the showroom while I was there...

Below is a shot of the upstairs "Studio" where a lively group of "in-house" graphic artists (many of whom exhibit their personal work) create custom artwork for film and television sets, large commercial projects, window displays and the like.

I was impressed with the amount of materials Astek uses as "the ground". From basic paper to cork, light-catching metallics, canvas, plywood, glass, fabric, plex, grasscloth, window film...even carpet!

Of course, I just had to inquire about their most unusual printing endeavor...the answer? Bubble wrap!

Everything is printed in-house. Astek provides eco-friendly UV digital printing as well as tradition screen printing. As someone who is always looking for that "unique" element to personalize a space, Astek is a great local resource where creativity can be stretched to the limit.

With winter's slow but steady approach (I do live in Southern California, after all) I am thinking about changing out my rugs for the new season. I recently saw some beautiful designs from The Rug Company. The Rug Company is collaborating with some fantastic designers, the piece above is from their collaboration with one of my favorites, William Yeoward.

A quick run around town unearthed a collection of textural home accessories that won't break the bank. Sandy neutrals with pops of bright white, red and coral keep the window feeling fresh and beachy without being too literal.

Tangled driftwood, jute tassel fringe and birch branches look modern against the chrome bar stand and arrangement of succulents. I think this might be my favorite window to date!

On Friday, CJ and Rachel went to look at the freshly poured concrete and meet with "the boys" (Yes-they are back!) to determine the details of our next fete - laying a beautiful layer of limestone...

Basil, Sage, Tarragon - Oh My!

I love to garden, and Summer brings the best bounty. I recently gave my garden a "face lift".

Here are some great herb planters I assembled over the weekend. I bought these wonderful containers at one of my favorite garden supply shops-Rolling Greens Nursery.

After gardening, I always enjoy a summer cocktail on the terrace, and I have added some fun accessories to change things up and create little vignettes, bringing the inside out.

I like to personalize my outdoor space by adding decorative objects here and there. This time I placed summery shells in my planters, along with a bird's nest (complete with eggs), and little stone birds.

I find that groupings of accessories are the frosting that gives any space a homey feel.

"Kitchen Revamp"

Sometimes a small change can make a huge difference. This was the case last week when we "revamped" a client's kitchen island.

Here is the kitchen "before". We changed out the stone from Black Absolute to Hallila Limestone and altered the shape of the island top.

Look at all of that testosterone! Here is a shot of "the guys" putting all of their efforts into removing the stone top-thanks to such talented artisans!

A new stainless steel sink and elegant polished nickel fixtures replaced the client's existing pieces. We also altered the wood finish on the island and changed the hardware. New silver accessories were added for extra sparkle.

These small changes created a richer, more elegant kitchen with details that flow beautifully with the rest of the house. Everyone was very pleased with the outcome!

This week I dined at two, brand new, beautifully designed restaurants here in Los Angeles. Fig and Olive serves up Mediterranean inspired "coastal cuisine", while the plates at Playa are more "Latin fusion". Both spaces are modern and clean with a distinct outdoor feel. Perfect for leisurely summer meals.

I had brunch at Playa, a very fun and friendly space with spectacular white "Sea urchin" light fixtures hanging above. A stark white brick wall sits against rich browns and charcoals, like the contrast between the sand and the sea.

The floor reminds me of a beach spotted with shells, and the chairs are the color of the sun before it sets. Mix that with their menu of summery tapas, it's a shorter drive to the beach without getting too sandy.

Fig and Olive is delightfully open and airy with a seamless indoor/outdoor atmosphere. The interior is simple. There are a handful of materials and the palette is sparse. Most of the space is white with an earthy pumpkin ceiling and sage accent walls.

Rattan and other natural textures are more traditional, giving Fig and Olive a sense of timelessness, with a modern twist. I particularly liked the large olive tree in the center and rosemary "hedges" separating comfortable tables of 6 outfitted with outdoor furniture.

When I told my husband about the chandelier, he said his dream version of "The Dinner Party" would be all Catherine Zeta-Jones...

My sculptures and installations combine rococo decoration with icons from popular culture. I comb the flea markets in search of 1950's squeaky toys, corporate mascots, miniature buildings, cartoon characters and dolls. Often the second and third generation knock-offs catch my eye, especially those that seem to pine for a grander existence. I cast these trinkets in clay, reinventing them and lavishing them with attention. Porcelain suggests luxury, refinement and royal provenance. While one flea market treasure seems a little sad, a florid profusion of them is cause for celebration. My sculptures examine the nature of consumption and desire in our time."

I find her work wickedly funny, fascinating and beautiful. Classic with a modern "twist" and social commentary to boot. If you are lucky enough to be in Manhattan, Katleman will be showing her work at the Jane Hartsook Gallery from January 20th until February 17th.

"At The LACMA"

Here at the Studio we celebrated the Holidays with a little lunch at Pentimento and a field trip to LACMA to see "Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail 1700-1915". This exhibition is the first glimpse at a sizable new collection of European garments and accessories.

The exhibit focuses on the development of both the silhouette and the production of clothing from bespoke items reserved only for the aristocracy to machine produced clothing.

100 historic garments are on display, and they are breathtaking. Just thinking about how those items were made, not to mention how the heck anyone got into them...it's amazing. These were the days before plastic surgery, so people "enhanced" their figures through undergarments...and they weren't using SPANX.

LACMA's blog, "Unframed" tells many stories of what goes into setting up the exhibit. Replicating missing buttons on a Gentleman's coat, repairing runs in "ever so delicate" stockings, and padding out the mannequins so as to protect and support the garments on display while maintaining the accurate silhouette for the time period.

One entry in particular talks about faux pearls sewn on a pink gown. The pearls are actually glass beads coated with luminous powder made of fish scales, gelatin and sturgeon glue.

This holiday season Inspiring Design books are at the top of my "gift" list. Here are my favorites...
"William Yeoward at Home" is the third book from the "premier" crystal, fabric and furniture designer. The book features the interiors of Mr. Yeoward's cottage in the Cotswolds and his pied a terre in London. I enjoyed having dinner with William and Colin a few months ago. Both fellows are just as warm, charming and "colorful" as you would imagine.

I just love getting an "inside look" at where my favorite designers live, don't you? I particularly enjoy using my "Flavia" large wine glasses, as shown above.

I find textiles very inspiring, so of course I love Tricia Guild's new book. We recently saw a presentation of her new line. As always, Designer's Guild if full of smashing colors and textures...and so is her book.

Although this room is predominately yellow, black and ivory...if you peer closer there is a touch of lime, a streak of silver and a warm blanket of brown. Bravo Tricia! Your color combinations are always so unexpected.

My First 24 Hours in New York City

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the Best Practices Network (BPN) Conference in New York. It's a great event in a great city. Designers come from all over the country to network and share business strategies.

Whenever I return to Manhattan, my first 24 hours is an "almost" sensory overload of inspiration. I say "almost" because I love it, I can never get enough. Here are a few things that caught my eye on that first day back... Here is a shot of the "Phrena" Hanging Lamp, "Folding Birdhouse", and "White Algae Screen-in-a-Box". This idea of Less is More is becoming a trend and financially it makes sense...if I am going to spend money, I like to purchase workhorse items I can combine in a multitude of ways for years to come. Out and About: The "W" Hotel in Hollywood

This week my Girlfriends Margy Hudson and Cyndi Weeks "kidnapped" me for lunch at the new "W" Hotel in the center of Hollywood. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the "Whisper" booth...obviously meant for cell phone users. What a GREAT concept... I love the sleek, curved glass exterior, with the sheer curtain for privacy. It's a fresh take on your classic "phone booth".

I know I have been on the phone in public more times than I would like to admit...too bad they don't have "Whisper" booths at the market!

We lunched at "Delphine", a wonderful and tasty French brasserie with a St. Tropez, Cote D' Azure vibe. Take a look at Margy's fantastic photos of the interior...

The amazing tile floor. Reminiscent of a sweeping courtyard in the Mediterranean. I love the unique iron banquet; the open base gives it an elegant, airy feel.

You probably can't see it, but there are rivets in the ceiling! Like an old ship in the harbor. They did a beautiful job on the bookcase with the architectural details at the top. They carried the same motif through to the bar.

After a decadent lunch of French Onion Soup, Pomme Frite and Lobster Rolls, (tre magnifique!), we toured the Bliss Spaahh. The interior of the Spaahh is fresh, fun and youthful...

I love the creative graphic design on the entryway to the Spaahh, especially since I view the original "Hollywood" sign every morning when I wake.

And the D.I.Y-esque "Body Butter" chandelier...this motif of "product as design element" is a beautiful marriage of form and function. Very "au courant".

The motif is repeated with the nail polish display/room dividers. I'm telling you, design IS in the details.

Last but not least, they have a conveyor belt on which various salon products rotate. Every so often, amongst the nail polish remover and emery boards, there is a brownie under a dome for the enjoyment of the clients.

I guess design can be in the dessert too ;)

As Interior Designers we pride ourselves in taking care of all of the minute details so that our clients don't have to. We will design your kitchen island AND source the salt cellars, antique cake stands and tasteful (pardon my pun) faux fruits, to accessorize with. These accessories help make a home seamless, and perfectly "lived in". It takes a lot of work and due diligence to create a beautiful, functional space that is reflective of the client and not too "Designed". But we all know what happens to (most) of our spaces once they have been lived in for a bit...we get more things, which pile up on counters and closets. If you don't already get the picture, I have included one below...

San Francisco Treat Part Two

Here it is, as promised, Part Two of "San Francisco Treat", my own mini shopping and restaurant guide for you exclusively Dear Readers.

While in San Francisco, we stayed in the new St. Regis which, in my opinion, is situated perfectly as it is next to the MOMA and across the street from "Yerba Buena Gardens", a wonderful public park. The park has a center for Visual Arts and Theatre; they have free open air concerts from May to October. They also have a Farmer's Market, an Ice Rink, a Children's "Zeum" and a lovely old Carousel.

My first shopping stop is always Modica Home, a wonderful little shop on Union Street in the Marina/Cow Hollow area of San Francisco. Cheryl always has the most charming and unusual items, centering on, you guessed it, "all things for the home", but don't miss the jewelry and other fashion accessories scattered within.

This trip I came away with a faux ostrich plum clutch, a deep plum alpaca pashmina, a gold interlocking "rings" necklace which can be worn several ways (all at lovely prices, by the way), and several Tokyo Milk gift items. Don't miss this jewel!

In between shopping adventures, I like to refresh with a light lunch at Mocca. This outdoor, Italian style cafe offers charming ambiance (the day I went, we enjoyed some live music) and a delicious menu to revive me before I head to Maiden Lane. Maiden Lane is just off of Union Square and it is one of my favorite places to leisurely wander in the "City by the Bay".

This time, I visited De Vera, a small step down shop that NEVER gets old. They have two outposts, one in the Bay Area and one in NYC. Each shop carries different, fabulous "curiosities"; the De Vera on Maiden Lane specializes in jewelry designed by the owner.

Everything decorative for the "tabletop" can be found at "Candelier", this place is great! They specialize in candles, beautiful containers and vessels, as well as a number of intriguing accessories. If you are in the area it is a definite "must" in my book.

On the way back to the St. Regis my Husband and I happened upon "Cask" and decided to explore.

Cask is staffed by "artisanal beverage purveyors" and has a wonderfully careful selection of small production wines, beers and spirits. The staff at Cask was very friendly and fun. It was a great new addition to my list of "favorites".

One of the highlights of the trip was our dinner at RN74, Michael Mina's new restaurant on Mission Street. RN74 is named after a train station in Europe. The train "motif" can be seen in the Streamline Moderne details incorporated in the interior.

We feasted on some delectable dishes including slow roasted beets with grilled peaches and crispy soft shell crab with ginger and lemon. We actually got to meet Mr. Mina himself! He graciously offered us a tour of the kitchen. If anyone out there is feeling adventuresome, Michael has posted some recipes on his website.

"San Francisco Treat"

When I travel I always make it a point to visit a local museum. This is by far one of my passions when traveling. This past weekend I had the pleasure of visiting the MOMA in San Francisco. My passion for the arts might only be rivaled by my passion for dogs. Meet my precious rescue dog "McTosh" or "Toshi" for short.

So you can imagine my zeal when I saw my two great loves combined in "Country Dog Gentlemen" by Roy De Forest.

This piece from MOMA's permanent collection, is very captivating. The painting is presented in "video" form, enticing visitors into the "interactive" children's area. The wonderful dogs magically come alive, one by one, with instructions to the children on the many wonders of museum-going. I am sure McTosh would approve.

Magritte has always been a favorite artist of mine. I loved visiting this painting again, and will continue to do so every time I visit San Francisco. It might have SOMETHING to do with my endless fascination with "interiors"...

Ah, Avedon. His fabulous fashion shots are so very elegant and timeless. I am always inspired by the clean silhouettes of fashion masters like Dior and Balenciaga, which he masterfully captures.

I particularly enjoyed the exhibition featuring the works of Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams. Ansel Adams's photos were juxtaposed with O'Keeffe's paintings, and although the differences between the works are pronounced, you can see multiple instances where they are inspired by an identical element...a landscape, a building, a piece of aged wood...

Adams amazes us with his incredibly precise photos, perfectly poised and detailed, showing us more shadows and shades of light and dark that I can imagine exist...And O'Keeffe thrills us with her love of color, abstraction and expressionism in her trademark "bold" fashion.

The San Francisco MOMA is such a jewel!

While the library at our Studio has been growing larger... I have been thinking about making the carbon footprint smaller...New materials from Ice Stone create a uniquley beautiful kitchen counter or fireplace surround.

With 70%-75% recycled content and no trace of VOCs (volitile organic compounds, of course!) you are on your way to "Reduce" and "Recycle".

We already have a poolside project in mind for this line of glass mosaic tile from "Trend USA"...

I think this would look fantastic in a pool. The textural pattern contrasted with the shimmer of the water...and it's made of 80% post consumer recycled content. So inviting.

Speaking of which, it's about time I wrap up and try a glass of this...

I'd love to own Philippe Starck's Mademoiselle Printed chair - the formal fabric's brocade pattern pairs artistically with the Lucite Legs.

Philippe's ultra smooth amorphous shaped Baobab Desk would keep clutter out of sight in my Studio, how about yours?

Now, down to "Earth"..."Green" thoughts also bring "Reuse" and "Recycle" in materials to mind as many sources are finally producing enviornmentally friendly products that are truly beautiful.

Hotel Plaza Athenee

Our headquarters for the recent "Design In New York" conference, celebrating the Art, Architecture & Interiors of this amazing City.

The Hotel remains a chic and welcoming "neighborhood"

home-away-from-home, and a great neigorhood it is!

We were hosted for a "cocktail salon" at the Chanel Boutique a few short steps away. Styled after CoCoChanel's Paris Apartment, every detail of the interior is perfect in my opinion. Stop by to see the walls covered in gold-highlighted lurex, custom made window sheers in a fabric so light it floats, looking very "now" in a very "Chanel" interpretation. Very inspirational, even if my "take away" was "not" the Camelia Bracelet with diamond tracery detail to die for!

Yes, that bracelet was something, but the "financial news" of the day brought me back to earth as this Robert Motherwell painting at the Museum of Modern Art brought to mind a recent Dow Jones chart. (Thankfully, the Market has rejected my vision and has rebounded nicely).

First night dinner was a prix fixe dinner in this charming Bistro in the neighborhood at 22 E. 66th Street. The lemon Dover sole was delicious. Very French - New York, and of course I loved it.

On to Business... as talented Little Rock designer Tobi Fairley and I study the "Interiors" auction catalog from and upcoming sale at Christie's. Among other things, we learned that many of their furniture pieces are quite "affordable". We were treated to a wonderful lecture about Beaux Arts Architecture in New York City, but more about that in the next Blog.

Ahh, La Goulue, a block or two away on Madison, a "neighborhood" staple for many many years. Had to dip in here for a quick lunch (tuna tartar with their signature pastel French Macaroons to die for). As their landmark building is going to be rennovated (into "new" retail, etc..), they're looking for a new home. I'll post that info when they've settled.

Ooops, a bit out of order, but we're back at Christie's, with a nice photo of Steve Noble, who put together this incredible trip. What a knowledgeable and delightful friend he has become... more later....

"The Lotus Club", founded in 1870, is located at 5 E. 66th Street. Stop by and enjoy the marvelous French Renaissance architecture, designed by Richard Howland Hunt in 1900. The Lotus is a private Club, but if you have an entree to peek inside, its worth it.

Down to Business here... where the D & D Building and Kravet Showroom hosted our business session. Pictured with me are Michael McKinnon and Alicia Shearer (far left), New York City designers, and next to me is designer Kelly Proxmire of Washington D.C.

Beautiful Bernardaud... please drop by 499 Park Avenue, where Bernardaud's gracious and friendly staff hosted "Tea" while educating us about their range of translucent Limoges porcelain in beautiful colorations, and including elements of platinum, lizard skin, leather and gold for their dinnerware, decorative objects, lighting fixtures and jewelry in many classic and modern styles.

Ahhh, such luxury. The art of Persian Carpets. These are not "mass-produced", but are "masterpieces" of artistry in their quality, patterning, color and original designs. I couldn't keep from "touching", as Orley & Shabahag hosted us for a showing at their 241 E. 58th Street showroom.

Sunday Brunch at "Artisanal", 2 Park Ave at 34th St, fulfilled my hunger, a congenial atmosphere for a great visit with friends, and was just the right "New York" touch at this Fromagerie, bistro and wine bar.

showcasing "Tabletop" ideas by many industry showrooms and manufacturers, design students and various design affiliates. Look for these events in many U.S. Cities. Lots of fun, fashionistas, cocktails and spirit and inspiration.

Jane Fonda's new Broadway Play, "33 Variations", by Moises Kaufman

was creative in so many ways, with music by Beethoven.

Go if you can.

Just back to Los Angeles from a whirlwind trip to my favorite city, New York City... My good friend and professional colleague, Steve Noble, brought a select group of interior designers from all points of the country to the City for three days packed with private receptions, museum tours, dinners and cocktails "around town", a stunning Broadway play ("33 Variations" with Jane Fonda), and much, much more.
